Toccoa commissioners approve $180,000 for police department relocation, vote to proceed with city hall renovations

In November 2025, Toccoa city commissioners discussed relocating the Police Department as part of a broader City Hall remediation effort and agreed to hold a work session to continue the discussion. At the same meeting, staff reported the city had sent a renovation and remediation request for proposals to five contractors, with one already inspecting the building and another expected.

At a work session later that month, Commissioner Jamieson discussed relocating the Police Department to Fernside, and City Manager Fredda Wheeler presented findings from an environmental study of City Hall. Mayor Carter noted the year's budget included $200,000 for renovations covering the entire building, including flooring, painting, demolition and signage.

The city commission then voted 5-0 to approve the Police Department relocation and allocate $180,000 for it, and separately voted 5-0 to approve City Hall Renovations.

Through the following months, staff gave updates on the work: the Police Department was expected to be in its new building by the end of January, quotes were being gathered for roof remediation, and crews later found an uncapped chimney they believe is a source of water getting into the ground floor.

By mid-2026, Public Works had scheduled evening demolition work at City Hall, and the renovation remained on commission agendas for discussion as late as August 2026.
