What this means now
The story
The Habersham County Board of Commissioners took up an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Demorest for county emergency services to provide fire protection. On Oct. 20, 2025, commissioners voted 5-0 to approve the agreement, with the county paying $655,396 per year, offset by credits of $90,000 per year and $30,000 per year.
The agreement also covered the City's real property and improvements at the Demorest Fire Department facility on Ivy Street, a 1.0-acre site.
On March 16, 2026, the board was asked to consider purchasing surplus fire equipment and gear from Demorest for a total of $75,000, to be applied as an $18,750-per-year credit over the four remaining years of the October 2025 agreement, which would require a First Amendment to that agreement.
Commissioners approved that First Amendment on April 20, 2026, by a vote of 3-0, allowing the county to purchase the surplus fire equipment and gear from the City of Demorest.
