What this means now

Where it stands

After the final hearing on October 9, the council unanimously adopted resolutions setting the 2025 millage rate at 6.000 mils for both Habersham and Rabun counties. The resolutions state the rate amounts to a 0.70 percent tax increase over the Habersham rollback rate and a 2.48 percent increase over the Rabun rollback rate.

The story

In June 2025 the Town Council certified an estimated rollback millage rate of 6 mils for this year's tax assessment notices, as required by state law, and sent that figure to the county boards of tax assessors and tax commissioners.

By September, county-level rollback calculations put the actual rollback rate lower than the town's estimate: 5.855 mils for the Rabun County portion of the digest and 5.958 mils for the Habersham County portion. The council voted to tentatively maintain the 6.0 mill rate for advertising purposes rather than roll back to either county figure.
