The story
In February 2025, Habersham County Solid Waste said it was applying for the state's STAR Grant to help fund a Tire Amnesty Day program.
By May 2026, the Board of Commissioners had before it a motion to ratify execution and submission of the FY26 Scrap Tire Abatement Reimbursement Grant Agreement with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division for the FY26 Tire Amnesty Event, under which the state would reimburse the county up to $75,000, with the county estimated to cover about $16,596.90 in costs above the state's reimbursement cap.
On May 18, 2026, the Board of Commissioners voted unanimously, 4-0, to approve ratification of the FY 2026 Scrap Tire Abatement Reimbursement Grant Agreement.
