Habersham airport’s $1 million budget request awaits proof of county action

Habersham County’s Airport Commission moved a proposed fiscal 2025 airport budget of a little more than $1 million into its public review process in May 2024, with $552,000 in requested county capital funding tied to work that includes an airport lighting project. The commission’s June 11 agenda then placed the proposed budget before members for review and a recommendation, but it does not show whether that step was completed.

The request matters because it seeks county money for both airport operations and capital improvements as part of Habersham’s wider FY2025 budget choices. The $552,000 capital portion alone represents more than half of the identified request, putting a substantial taxpayer-funded infrastructure item—lighting—at the center of a budget whose final disposition is not established here.

Commissioners first reviewed the figures on May 14 after Tim Sims said they were intended for Board of Commissioners approval. That discussion covered more than the headline total: members also addressed reimbursement accounting, depreciation and possible changes in operating costs. The June 11 agenda’s call for a review and recommendation indicates the budget was expected to advance through another commission step, but an agenda alone cannot establish that commissioners acted on it.

Airport commissioners were the body reviewing and potentially recommending the request, while the Board of Commissioners was identified as the body expected to approve the budget figures. For county residents, the issue is whether and at what level public funds would support airport operations and capital work. The May minutes document the proposal and its components, but they do not record competing arguments, a vote or an adopted position by either board.

What is documented is a May budget review and a June agenda item proposing review and recommendation. What remains unproven is equally important: the materials do not establish that the Airport Commission recommended the request, that the Board of Commissioners approved, altered or rejected it, or that the final airport appropriation matched the proposed amount.
