Habersham’s District 3 election plan remains unconfirmed after special-election resolution reached board agenda

Habersham County commissioners were scheduled to consider a special election for the unexpired District 3 commission term at their Feb. 16, 2026 meeting, but the agenda does not record whether they adopted the measure, rejected it or set an election date. Resolution 2026-02-003 proposed calling an election for a term ending Dec. 31, 2026, making the board’s unrecorded action the central unanswered question for District 3 residents.

The decision matters because it concerns representation on the Habersham County Board of Commissioners during the remaining months of the District 3 term. An election call would begin a public process to choose someone for that remainder; without a documented board action, neither the existence of that election nor its timetable is established. The resolution addresses only the unexpired term, not an already confirmed election outcome.

The proposal followed Commissioner Jimmy Tench’s resignation, which Habersham News reported would take effect Feb. 13. In a Feb. 12 report, the publication said commissioners were expected to vote on the election-call resolution at the Feb. 16 meeting and that county officials anticipated a special election alongside the May 19 general primary. Four days later, the official meeting agenda placed Resolution 2026-02-003 before the board, confirming that the proposal was scheduled for consideration but not confirming the expected sequence moved forward.

For the Board of Commissioners, the immediate question was whether to call an election for the term’s balance. The county Board of Elections was identified in Habersham News’s report as the body expected to consider approval of the call at a Feb. 17 special-called meeting, contingent on the process described in that report. Prospective District 3 candidates and voters also had a direct stake: the report said a proposed May 19 special election and the regular election for the term beginning in 2027 would be separate races, requiring separate qualification for anyone seeking both.

What is documented is a proposed resolution on the Feb. 16 commission agenda. What is not documented there is a board vote, adoption, amendment or rejection; an election date; candidate qualification; an advertised call for election; or a completed action by the elections board. Habersham News reported expectations for a May 19 election, March 2–6 qualifying and a possible June 16 runoff, but those were reported plans rather than confirmation that the commission authorized them. The agenda alone also does not establish whether another method was used or would be used to address the vacancy.

The concrete next public record needed is minutes from the Feb. 16 Board of Commissioners meeting or a later county resolution stating what happened to Resolution 2026-02-003. Such a record could show whether the county authorized an election, changed the proposal or took no action, and could establish any resulting schedule. Until then, the question is not whether an election was discussed—it plainly was—but whether Habersham County formally started a District 3 special-election process.
