Habersham County Leaves Industrial Park Streetlight Bills Unresolved

Habersham County commissioners unanimously postponed a decision on continued streetlight billing at the county industrial park on Aug. 14, 2025, voting 6-0 to table the item until their September meeting. The procedural vote left unanswered who will bear the ongoing charges for the lights.

The question is larger than a routine utility payment because it is connected to the county’s consideration of ending its role in operating the industrial park. Commissioners had raised the issue months earlier, on April 17, when they discussed ending the county’s operational role at the industrial park. That conversation included an estimated remaining balance of roughly $19,000 owed to HEMC for streetlight construction and options for handling it, but the discussion produced no documented decision. By August, the question had broadened to continued billing, and commissioners deferred action rather than settle it.

County commissioners are the public body that must decide whether to continue the county’s financial role in the industrial park’s lighting. HEMC was identified in the April meeting minutes as the entity owed the estimated remaining construction amount. The records describe county officials discussing possible ways to address the balance and the county’s park role, but they do not identify a final position from HEMC or another prospective payer.

What the commission completed was a tabling vote, not a resolution of the billing dispute. The roughly $19,000 figure was an estimate discussed for remaining streetlight construction; it is not a documented settlement, payment or final bill.
