Swimmers press Habersham County for a plan to prevent aquatic-center pool failures

Competitive swimmers asked Habersham County commissioners on Nov. 20, 2023, to adopt and publish a preventative-maintenance schedule for the county aquatic center and to ensure properly trained staff maintain its pools. Cassie Head, speaking for the competitive swimming community, made the appeal after repairs had reopened the lap pool, urging the county to prevent the next problem rather than wait to repair it.

The request centers on the reliability of a public lap pool used by competitive swimmers and other residents. A routine maintenance plan and qualified pool operators could make upkeep expectations more visible and help the county address equipment or water-management problems before they disrupt use, but commissioners’ minutes do not show whether the county committed to either step.

Head’s remarks followed the repairs that restored access to the lap pool, which she thanked the county for completing. She used that reopening to argue for a different approach: regular preventative work and trained personnel, rather than a cycle in which the facility is repaired only after a failure. She also told commissioners that pool water quality had been a concern since 2022 and reported dermatology or sinus problems among users; those were her statements, not findings independently established in the minutes.

Head represented the competitive swimming community and specifically sought a published schedule plus staff with appropriate pool-maintenance training. She said the county could train two or three certified pool operators for a few hundred dollars each, and she asked officials to pursue hosting a state championship meet the following July. The draft minutes preserve her requests but do not record a response, position or vote from the Board of Commissioners.

The lap-pool repairs Head referenced were already complete when she spoke. Her proposed maintenance schedule, staffing changes and operator training remained requests, not documented county actions. As of Aug. 27, 2026, the record here does not confirm that Habersham County adopted a preventative-maintenance schedule, added maintenance staff or implemented pool-operator training; that gap does not establish that no work occurred outside the documented proceedings.

The next public sign of a decision would be a Board of Commissioners minute entry or Recreation Department record addressing the aquatic center’s maintenance schedule, staffing or pool-operator training. Until then, it remains unresolved whether the county will publish a routine upkeep plan, change staffing, seek certification or training, or take another route in response to swimmers’ concerns.
