Habersham airport lighting project remains stalled at state design review

Habersham County’s airport lighting project remained in design and was awaiting its first comments from the Georgia Department of Transportation when Lead Edge Design Group updated airport officials at their Jan. 14, 2025 regular meeting. The consultant said GDOT’s feedback would have to be incorporated into the plans before the agency could approve them and the county could put the work out for bid.

The pending review is the project’s practical hinge point: it separates planning from procurement and any eventual field work at the Habersham County airport. Until the state comments are received, addressed and followed by GDOT approval, the county has no confirmed path to solicit contractors, leaving residents and airport users without a documented timetable for the lighting improvements.

The January update followed a slower-than-anticipated schedule described three months earlier. On Oct. 8, 2024, Lead Edge said there had been no change in the lighting project and that it planned to submit designs to GDOT in December, with bidding anticipated in the spring. By January, the project had reached the design-review stage, but the consultant was still waiting for the agency’s first comments rather than reporting an approved design or a bid package.

Lead Edge Design Group presented the project’s status to airport officials and described the sequence it expected: GDOT comments, revisions to the plans, state approval and then bidding. GDOT, meanwhile, is the reviewing agency whose comments and approval are required under that stated process. The meeting updates do not describe competing proposals, public opposition or a dispute over the project itself; they portray the delay as a matter of design review.

What is documented is limited: the project was in design as of Jan. 14, 2025, and GDOT comments were pending. Revising plans and seeking bids were future steps, not completed acts.
