Habersham Planning Commission Clears 185-Foot Verizon Monopine Near Commerce Parkway Day Care

Habersham County’s Planning Commission voted 5-0 on March 3 to approve Cellco Partnership, doing business as Verizon Wireless, to place a proposed 185-foot telecommunications monopine on Commerce Parkway. The approval covered case WTF-26-01 and the tract identified as Map 082 Parcel 039; the commission acted after public comment on the request.

The decision matters because the planned tower would be a prominent new land use beside an area where child care was a central concern during the hearing. For Verizon, the vote authorized the request submitted to the Planning Commission. For Foundation Academy representatives and nearby residents following the case, it raised the practical question of what may be built on the Commerce Parkway parcel and whether later county steps will follow.

Verizon brought the proposal to the commission as a request to install the 185-foot monopine on Map 082 Parcel 039. During the March 3 meeting, speakers addressed the use of the property, including the landowner’s representative, who said the landowner supported Verizon’s intended use. After the public discussion, a commissioner moved to approve the request as submitted, another seconded it, and all five commissioners voted yes.

Two representatives of Foundation Academy opposed the proposal, citing concerns about radio-frequency radiation and children’s proximity to the planned location. Their objections were arguments raised at the meeting, not findings adopted by the commission. The landowner’s representative took the opposite position, saying the owner supported the use, while Verizon was the applicant seeking approval for the monopine.
