Demorest considers shifting mayoral appointments and council administrative roles
Demorest City Council opened a possible rewrite of the mayor’s charter duties at its Dec. 2, 2025 workshop, considering a home-rule ordinance that would address appointment of a mayor pro tem, designation of a council member to sign checks and the end of council members’ assignments to city departments. Residents will need a later council agenda, ordinance or minutes to determine whether Demorest formally adopts the home-rule amendment and, if so, when it takes effect. Until that public action is recorded, the unanswered questions include the final method for selecting check-signing authority, the role of the mayor and council in appointments, and whether the city has formally ended council members’ departmental assignments.
