Demorest advances City Hall concepts for pricing, with cost and construction still unresolved

Demorest City Council has approved concept plans for a possible new City Hall, taking the proposal into a pricing phase without committing the city to build. The council approved the motion 3-1 in 2025, with Councilman Ferguson making the motion, Councilman Bennett seconding it and Davis voting no; Mayor Harkness said the plans were intended to let the city obtain quotes.

The vote matters because a City Hall can move from a general civic discussion toward a consequential financial decision once officials know its likely price. But the council has not established what the building would cost, where it would sit, what it would contain or whether taxpayers will ultimately be asked to support construction.

What the council completed was limited: approval of concept plans so the city could seek prices. A new City Hall remains a proposal, not an authorized building project. No quote amount, budget allocation, project location, construction timetable, contract or later construction approval is established, and the Sept. 4 agenda item does not show whether any action followed its listing.

Residents’ next concrete opportunity to track the proposal will come through a future council agenda, minutes, contract record or budget action that identifies the quotes and shows whether officials choose to advance, revise or stop the idea. Until such action appears, the central questions—cost, location, scope and whether Demorest will authorize construction—remain open.
